What to Do When God Gives You a Hard Command

Why God Teaches You the Same Thing Over and Over Again

What God teaches us in one area of life we can easily miss in another area. So God has to repeat Himself. But sometimes the connection isn’t so easy for us to make.

Why God Teaches You the Same Thing Over and Over Again

Jesus performed more miracles in the vicinity of the Sea of Galilee than any other place in His ministry. Standing on its shores, one can easily see across the shallow lake. The hills to the east and west tower above the water. As cool air from these heights rushes down the slopes into the lake’s warmer basin, winds can whip up the surface of the water to deadly proportions.

A small craft, such as the one Matthew reported the disciples clung to during a stormy night, could find itself foundering in an instant.

In one day, Christ taught His disciples a simple truth we should never forget.

Empowered to Do an Impossible Command

Jesus told the apostles to cross the Sea of Galilee without Him. As they did, a tremendous storm threatened to swamp the boat. To make matters worse, when the disciples saw Jesus walking on the water toward them, they thought He was a ghost! But Jesus told them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid” (Matt. 14:27).

Peter replied, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”

Jesus said, “Come.” And Peter did it—through the enabling power of Jesus.

Same Lesson All Over Again

Almost as incredible as Peter’s walking on the water was Jesus’ rebuke when Peter sank. Peter was the only other person besides Christ to ever walk on the waves, and Jesus told him he had little faith!

Why? Because Peter had little faith compared to what he knew. What did he know? Just hours earlier on the shore, Jesus had given Peter and the disciples an equally impossible task in feeding the 5,000: “You give them something to eat” (v. 16).

And they did—through the enabling provision of Jesus.

Two Places, One Lesson

That day, Christ taught His disciples—in a variety of locations—a single truth we also should never forget. We must come to Him not only by requesting provision, but also by stepping out in faith, believing that He has provided all we need to obey Him.

Has Jesus given you a hard command—even an impossible one? Think about how you can apply to that part of your life the lessons you easily apply in others. Likely, it’s the same lesson.

The storm we face today is only an opportunity for God to reveal His faithful character—and to develop ours.

I gave up work after being challenged by God to risk my income for the sake of my family. It gave me a lot of trust in the fact that God provides. Everytime we really needed money we got it. For 1,5 years we lived on one income (more difficult in my country than in the USA due to taxation regulations) while I took care of my dying mom and my special needs child. So it became easy for me to have faith in the Lord.

But just as you have written, the lesson now needs to be learned again for another part of my life. Thank you for the encouragement to keep going even though I´m anxious about my future right now!

    • What a great story, Tea. Thank you having the courage to follow God when it seemed unwise financially to do so. Thanks for trusting Him now as you wait on His leading. Your words inspire me.

God might have been given me a hard Command in the past, but i didn’t know that was actually a God command to trust Him,but the problem that i’m currently facing right now is also the problem that only God can solve Wayne,so if God will ,He would also help me to solve my current problem.

    • If you’re willing to wait for His timing, He promises to lead. I hope you have a group of like-minded believers with whom you can pray and seek their counsel and encouragement.

      • ARM BAR

Yes you are absolutely right Wayne,i Didn’t have any Christ Believer friends back then, and i was such an impatient person, but i have learnt now about waiting on God’s timing, would you please to pray for me Wayne ,if You don’t mind,Thank You Wayne.

I was just speaking and praying about this last week. It is so very easy for me to Trust God when it comes to my finances and tangible matters. I don’t worry of these things because he has never failed me. It is when things hit my emotions, such as my marriage restoration that I start to waiver and forget the ‘Wait” and “Be Still”.

    • I agree with you, K. It’s those intangibles that struggle to hold loosely. Still, it’s a paradox because we trust God for the intangible afterlife! We’re a piece of work, aren’t we?

  • Mercy

    In health matters

    • Yes, Mercy, the Lord uses our physical lives to speak volumes into our spiritual lives. I’m sorry it’s a challenge for you. I just prayed for you.

I guess I’m coming to Him with provisions a lot. I need to step out in Faith for what He wants of me. This is one im going to need to pray on.?! Good read has me thinking. Im going to need to pray and ask God if there is anything you are trying to teach. Open my heart and eyes to see. I know I want a change in my life right now and am tired of the current situation. Have been patient and thankful but ready for a change. Confused? But I know God will help. God bless Wayne.
    Thanks

    • We’re always ready for the next season. (Me too.) Thankfully, the Lord knows when to turn the light green.

  • Aaron Levenhagen

As odd as it may sound, I find it easiest to trust God with eternity. I have no trouble believing that my eternity is secure through faith in Christ. But I have a much harder time trusting God with the mundane day-to-day details. Which is harder to accomplish–salvation or whatever silly thing concerns me today? And yet…..I still try to grind it out in my own strength.

    • Hey, Aaron, for some reason I just saw your comment. Sorry! Thanks for your insight, as always– and your honestly. God bless.

    • Erin, I appreciate your passion, but my blog is not a place for debate. You don’t have to agree with me— that’s fine— but you may not be combative or belligerent. Just above the comments section, I tell all readers: “I’d love to hear your thoughts. Just keep it kind and relevant.” Any comments that fit that description are welcome; otherwise, they are not.
